Dying your hair in a unique color is a great way to express yourself. However, not everyone has the time and funds to buy special hair dyes or dye their hair at a salon. Also, not everyone can (or is allowed to) maintain a unique hair color for long. Luckily, non-permanent markers can be an affordable temporary option for getting a cool and attractive hair color.

Part 1 of 3: Preparing the Paint
Step 1. Select the desired color
If you have dark hair, a more suitable choice is a darker color. If you have light hair, there are more color options to try because almost any color can be seen in your hair.
- If you want to dye your hair an unusual color, but aren't sure how it will look on your hair, this DIY hair dye can be a great choice.
- You don't have to maintain the color you get for very long, and it's okay if you don't like the result. The color will disappear after a few washes.
Step 2. Open the color marker you want to use
You can use colored markers like Snowman or Faber Castel. These products are available in a variety of colors and patterns. However, you can use any brand of marker as long as the product is labeled “washable” or “non-permanent”. After selecting the desired color, you need to remove the ink from the marker. With a little hand strength, you can disassemble the marker.
- Use scissors to cut or pull the flap at the bottom of the marker open.
- Press the front of the marker (the sharp part) against a hard surface so that the ink cartridge inside the marker loosens and comes off.
- Carefully remove the ink cartridge from the marker.
Step 3. Blow the tube to dispense the ink into the container
You need to dip the end of the tube into the water first. When one end of the ink tube is submerged in water, the ink will be pushed from one end to the other. The end of the tube that goes into the water will turn white when the ink is pushed. Keep the tube submerged in water until the tip is completely white and no longer holds the ink. After that, you can safely place your lips on the end of the tube and start blowing air into the tube.
Make sure you hold the jar over a cup or other container. Once you start blowing air, the ink will come out of the other end of the tube. You need a container to hold the ink that comes out so the work area doesn't get dirty
Step 4. Add hair conditioner to the paint if desired
You can apply the ink or paint directly to your hair if you want a more intense color. However, some people usually add a little conditioner to the ink that has been successfully removed from the marker tube. Adding conditioner makes the paint easier to work with, but the color will appear paler. Try both methods and determine which method is more suitable for your needs.
Part 2 of 3: Using Paint
Step 1. Put on old unused gloves and T-shirts
Non-permanent marker ink can leave color/stains on hands and clothes, just as on hair. Although it can lift off the skin, there may be some color left on your hands for a few days if you don't wear gloves when you apply the paint. Wear an old, unused T-shirt because the paint will drip and hit the clothes (unless you've been trained).
Step 2. Apply paint as desired
Some people prefer to dip the ends of their hair in the dye, while others prefer to apply the dye all over their hair. Maybe you only want to dye certain sections of your hair, or you are just "ambitious" about dyeing each strand. However, consider the amount of paint available. The more hair you want to color, the more dye you'll need, and the more markers you'll need to remove.
Some experts/fans of self-dyeing hair prefer to open the ink cartridge and apply the felt-filled ink directly to the hair. You can try this method if you find it easier to get the hair color you want
Step 3. Cover the hair while waiting for the dye to absorb into the hair strands
If you're dyeing certain sections of your hair, cover them with foil so that the dye doesn't get to other parts of your hair that aren't dyed. If you're dyeing only the ends of your hair, wrap the ends in foil or leave the ends exposed. However, make sure you're careful not to touch the ends of the dyed hair when the dye is allowed to soak into the strands.
Unlike when you use regular hair dye, you don't need to rinse your hair after coloring it. Let the hair dry with the paint or ink still attached. Keep wrapping your hair in aluminum foil until your hair is dry
Part 3 of 3: Checking the Coloring Results
Step 1. Dry the dyed hair
If you are wrapping sections of hair that have already been dyed in foil, remove the paper after 30 minutes to an hour to air dry your hair. It's a good idea to let your hair dry naturally. However, you can still dry your hair with a hairdryer if you don't have much time. As you dry your hair, be careful not to let your hair come into contact with furniture, walls, or other objects that could get paint on.
If you are using a mixture of marker ink and conditioner, rinse your hair with cold water. After that, dry your hair naturally by aerating it
Step 2. Check the coloring results
If the color that comes out looks more intense, rinse your hair with cold water. It's important to use cold water because hot water can lift the dye from your hair. If the color is not too dark or deep, repaint until you get the color you want.
One of the advantages of this hair coloring technique is that you can customize the appearance of the color you want. You can easily rinse your hair to lighten your hair color, or repaint your hair several times to make it appear darker, without worrying about damaging your hair. Unlike when you use regular hair dye, you can experiment with this method until you get a look that works for your hair
Step 3. Lock the color in the dyed hair using a hair spray product
Colored hair as desired. When you're done, lock in the color using a hairspray product. In addition to holding the hairdo, the use of hairspray can also lock the color and smooth out the part of the hair that has been dyed. Enjoy your new hair beauty!
