Adding oil to your hair care routine is a great option to add shine to your hair, moisturize your scalp, and promote hair growth. However, most hair oil products are very difficult to clean. If in some cases just regular shampoo and conditioner will suffice, in some cases you may need to use a "clarifying" shampoo to remove oil from your hair more effectively. If you want, you can also rinse your hair with a variety of home remedies, such as apple cider vinegar, baking soda, aloe vera, or eggs to remove any excess oil.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Using Shampoo and Conditioner
Step 1. Wash with your favorite shampoo several times
In the shower, apply shampoo to your hair and massage it into your scalp to spread it more evenly. Then, rinse the shampoo thoroughly with warm water. Repeat the process once or twice, as many times as you need.
After shampooing, apply conditioner to the entire surface of your hair, then let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing it off
Step 2. Use a clarifying shampoo if regular shampoo doesn't seem to work
Clarifying shampoos are able to deeply cleanse your hair, gradually removing the build-up of residue that regular shampoos can't handle. How to use itself is no different from ordinary shampoo. In other words, you can directly apply shampoo to still damp hair, massage it into your scalp and spread it all over the ends of your hair, then rinse thoroughly.
Don't forget to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner afterward, especially since a clarifying shampoo can strip your hair of many of the natural vitamins and minerals, leaving it feeling dry. That's why you need to combine its use with shampoos and conditioners that contain moisturizers to restore these lost nutrients
Step 3. Use dry shampoo to absorb excess oil on hair
Before using dry shampoo, first wipe each strand with a clean, dry towel, starting from the roots to the tips, to absorb excess oil on the surface of the hair. Then, apply dry shampoo in powder form to your scalp.
- If necessary, use a coarse-bristled brush to smooth out any grease that has accumulated in several areas.
- If your hair is still a little oily, try sprinkling baby powder on top of dry shampoo, then massage and comb through your hair until you don't see any white spots or powder residue.
Step 4. Add a little dish soap to remove stubborn grease
Powdered dish soap (detergent) is a very powerful ingredient for cleaning stubborn grease on your tableware. As a result, the same benefits can also be felt by your hair! If you want to use this method, you only need to sprinkle 2 tbsp. dishwashing detergent into your hair, then massage it into your scalp. Then, rinse your hair well to make sure that no detergent residue remains, especially since the substances present in it run the risk of damaging your hair if you leave it on for too long.
- Use dish soap intended for sensitive skin, especially since this type of detergent contains ingredients that are gentler on your hair.
- After that, immediately wash your hair and apply conditioner as usual to restore the nutrients lost by using dish soap.
Step 5. Use your regular conditioner after shampooing
After shampooing your hair and rinsing it, apply conditioner as usual. Do not forget to massage the scalp to the ends of the hair with your fingers so that the conditioner is able to coat the hair more evenly.
Leave the conditioner for a few minutes before rinsing it off with warm water
Step 6. Use a leave-in conditioner
Apply a sufficient amount of leave-in conditioner to wet hair to remove any lingering oil. As the name implies, you can go straight to activities after that because this type of conditioner does not need to be rinsed.
- Generally, leave-in conditioners are sold in spray or cream bottles.
- Leave-in conditioner can also replace regular conditioner, especially if regular conditioner doesn't work to remove oil from your hair.
Method 2 of 2: Using Homemade Ingredients
Step 1. Make a paste of baking soda
Pour a small amount of baking soda into the palm of your hand, then add a little water to give it a paste-like texture. Then, apply the baking soda paste to each strand of hair, starting from the roots to the tips, and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.
You may need to make additional baking soda paste so that there is enough to cover the entire surface of your hair
Step 2. Rinse hair with apple cider vinegar
Mix equal amounts of water and apple cider vinegar, then spray the solution all over your hair evenly. After that, gently massage your scalp, wrap your hair with a shower cap, and let the apple cider vinegar solution sit for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, rinse off the solution with warm water, then apply conditioner to restore moisture to your hair and remove the annoying vinegar smell.
In addition, you can also rinse your hair with plain white vinegar
Step 3. Use aloe vera
Aloe vera contains various types of minerals and enzymes that are effective in cleaning the oil on your scalp. If you want, you can apply aloe vera gel directly to your hair and let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.
Alternatively, you can also add 1 tsp. aloe vera gel and 1 tsp. lemon juice into 2 tbsp. your favorite shampoo, then apply it to your hair and let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it off
Step 4. Rinse hair with a mixture of rosemary stems and mint leaves
Pour 500 ml of water into a saucepan, then heat it over high heat. When the water starts to heat up, add 2.5-5 cm of rosemary stem and 1 tbsp. min leaves into the water. Boil the water for a few minutes, then add the juice of one lemon to it. Wait for the water to cool down before using it.
Once the water cools down, use it immediately to rinse off any oil left in your hair. Massage the water into your scalp and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water
Step 5. Wash off the oil in the hair with an egg
First of all, you need to first break one raw egg into a bowl, then beat it as you would make an omelet so that the whites and yolks are mixed. Then, add 2 tbsp. cold water, stir again, then apply the mixture to the scalp while gently massaged with your fingers.
- Leave the mixture for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with cold water until clean.
- If you want, you can add about 1 tbsp. castile soap into the scalp, then massage it gently. Don't worry if the soap doesn't cover the entire hair shaft all the way to the ends! After that, rinse your hair and scalp with lukewarm water.
