Depending on the method used, a simple chiffon can be made using just one or two items. Whether you're looking to suck gas from a car, or are simply demonstrating how a siphon works for a science experiment, a siphon can be made using a few tools and in no time. Siphoning can be done to suck up gas, empty the aquarium tank, etc. Making a chiffon doesn't cost a lot of money and the process is simple.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making a Siphon from a Large Tank
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
You will need 1.6 cm x 2.2 cm 3 meter long vinyl hose, an empty clear plastic bottle, one 1.25 cm ball valve, three 1.25 cm male hose adapters, and pipe tape.
- You can use a larger vinyl hose if you need a siphon longer than 3 meters.
- All of these materials can be purchased at a hardware store, usually in the irrigation section.
- You'll also need scissors, a wrench, and a tongs.
Step 2. Drill a hole in the bottle
First of all, remove the label attached to the bottle. Wash it first if the bottle was previously filled with something other than mineral water. Make a 2 cm hole in the bottle cap. To make it easier, drill a hole when the cap is firmly attached to the bottle.
Step 3. Insert one of the male hose adapters
Fit the thick end of one of the male adapters into the hole in the bottle cap.
Step 4. Cut your bottle
Cut about 5 cm from the bottom of the bottle using scissors. Turn on the lighter and heat the cut edges of the bottle. You can simply touch the flame along the cut edge of the bottle to make the plastic stronger.
Step 5. Fit the hose adapter with the ball valve
First, apply several layers of pipe tape to the thick ends of the two male hose adapters. After that, attach them to both ends of the ball valve. Use a wrench to make the connection tight.
Step 6. Cut and install your hose
Use scissors to cut the hose 1-1, 2 meters long. Attach one end of this hose to the male hose adapter connected to the bottle, and connect the other end of the male hose adapter to the ball valve. Attach the remaining end of the hose to the last male hose adapter.
The function of the ball valve is to stop and activate the siphon without having to put the mouth into a hose that has been exposed to dirty water
Method 2 of 3: Making a Home Chiffon
Step 1. Gather the required materials
In order to siphon water or other drinks from one container to another, you will need a rubber sink stopper 2.9 cm to 3.2 cm in diameter, a 0.6 cm hose 0.6 meters long, a 1 cm hose 1 meter long, scissors, and drill or Dremel.
- You will need a drill bit smaller than 0.6 cm.
- You will need a sink stopper that has a concave or hollow side so that it fits into the sink. Don't buy solid stoppers.
Step 2. Punch a hole in your sink plug
Make holes in the sink plugs on either side of the small protrusions used to pull the plugs out of the sink. These two holes should be as close to the protrusion as possible and vertically straight.
Step 3. Insert a small hose into the hole
Slide a small hose through one of the holes. Place the sink plug in the mouth of the bottle to be sucked, and insert the hose until it touches the bottom of the bottle.
If the hose doesn't fit, you can enlarge the hole, as long as you're careful. Do not let the hole made too big because the hose must be installed snugly and can not be passed air
Step 4. Remove excess hose
Now, you need to cut the hose you just put into the bottle through the hole in the sink stopper. Cut about 5 cm above the stopper and do not remove excess hose.
Step 5. Insert the excess hose through the other hole
Insert the hose that was just cut into the other hole to a distance of 2.5 cm.
Step 6. Attach the large hose to the small hose
Slide the large hose into the smaller hose that goes all the way to the bottom of the bottle. Attach the large hose to the small hose to a distance of 5 cm so that they do not fall apart.
Step 7. Blow into the excess hose
To start siphoning, place the sink stopper on the lip of the bottle containing the drink. Place the other end of the hose in the container you want to fill. Blow into excess hose to start siphoning.
Method 3 of 3: Making a Siphon from a Straw
Step 1. Gather the required materials
Make a simple straw siphon for a child's experiment, or a demonstration of the laws of physics that occur during siphoning. Prepare two bendable straws, scissors and tape.
Step 2. Cut one of the straws
Cut one of the straws just before the bent part. Now, you have a straw that can't be bent. Cut the straw slightly obliquely so that it now has a pointed end.
Step 3. Insert the straw piece into another straw
Tuck the pointed end of the straw into the other straw. A pointed straw is inserted into the end of the straw near the bend. Insert the straw far enough so it doesn't come loose.
Step 4. Glue the straws with tape
Wrap the joint of the two straws with tape. Wrap the tape several times as you need to make sure no air can get through this section.
Step 5. Place the straw in a container filled with liquid
Insert one end of your straw into a container of liquid. Make sure the straw goes in far enough that the bendable part is submerged in the liquid.
Step 6. Do the siphoning
Cover the end of the straw on the outside of the container with your finger. Remove your straw from the container. You will see liquid enter the straw when you lift it. While closing the end of the straw with your finger, insert the tip into the container you want to fill. Once logged in, release your finger. The liquid will now move from one container to another.
Step 7.
