Begging your parents to buy you an iPhone is a big request: the phone alone is expensive, and you also have to pay to activate the phone number and data plan on it. What's more, parents may doubt your responsibility in using the cell phone. Before asking, you must demonstrate that you are responsible and trustworthy. You also have to start the conversation with certain strategies so that your request can be granted. Make sure that you always help out with homework and have your parents have high expectations of you.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Showing You're Responsible
Step 1. Always keep the phone in use
If you tend to lose or damage expensive items, your parents probably won't want to "spend" more money to buy you an expensive iPhone. You may need to spend a few weeks or even months changing their perspective before making a request.
If you already have a cell phone, make sure that you always take care of it. If you often put it carelessly, your parents will remember it when you ask to buy a more expensive cell phone
Step 2. Take care of all your valuables
Make sure that you also take good care of other electronic devices, including game systems, iPods, tablets, and/or computers. Keep all these devices clean, tidy and well protected. For example, always carry your laptop with its protective case, never eat or drink around the laptop, or some other things.
You should also take good care of your jewelry, watches, and other expensive accessories. For example, if you recently lost an expensive earring you got for Christmas, your parents will use that as proof that you can't be trusted to own anything else (such as an iPhone!)
Step 3. Make sure that you are diligent about working at home
If you are diligent about cleaning the house without being asked by your parents, they will notice. If you carry on for the long term, you can convince your parents that you deserve an iPhone.
By completing homework quickly and not complaining-or even willing to work more-you are showing that you can take your responsibilities seriously and that you are willing to help
Step 4. Maintain (or improve) your grades
While the iPhone is a useful tool for learning at school (which will be discussed in more detail later), parents may be afraid, because it could prevent you from focusing on your studies. Before asking your parents to buy you an iPhone, focus on maintaining or improving your grades.
If your grades are bad, you will have to take all the lessons (or get extra lessons) to improve on your good grades. Invite your teacher to discuss and ask for feedback on your strengths and weaknesses, then make a plan to improve grades
Step 5. Consider getting a tutor
You may be able to get free tutoring at the school, but if you (or your parents) are willing to pay for extra tutoring, the money is well worth it:
You should be able to get better grades in school, then show your parents that you take your studies seriously
Step 6. Consider looking for a job
As part of your strategy to convince parents to buy you an iPhone, you may be able to help out with some of the costs. Of course, you need your own money to do this.
- As long as your parents agree, consider finding a part-time job for after-school hours or on weekends. Check all grocery stores, clothing stores, and/or restaurants to see if there are vacancies available.
- Offer services as a tutor, babysitter, or garden cleaner. You could also start a business making and selling art, or starting selling baked goods.
Step 7. Use money responsibly
Once you have an income, you may feel the urge to spend it on fun, for example by buying new clothes, a new video game, or spending an evening at the movies. While there's nothing wrong with being extravagant as long as you can afford it, remember that you have bigger goals.
Whether your money comes from hard work yourself, or perhaps as pocket money or a gift (such as the money your grandma gave you on your birthday), you need to show your parents that you can save, and also limit your spending
Step 8. Set a spending limit, then apply it with discipline
Take the time to plan an expenditure limit that is adjusted to your weekly/monthly income, and also write down your regular expenses. After that, remember to never spend more than the limit you set.
- This means that you may have to turn down a friend's invitation to go out for pizza, but you should stay focused on your ultimate goal, which is your iPhone.
- By keeping your spending within limits, you develop a disciplined attitude, as well as get into the habit of focusing. In no time, you'll be a better person, and able to show your parents that you can help pay for the iPhone and data plan.
Part 2 of 3: Preparing Before Talking to Parents
Step 1. Find out about iPhone prices
Before talking to your parents, do some research on how much it will cost to buy or replace a new iPhone. Make sure that you find out about the network services used by your family, and the types of data plans that are activated, then do an internet search about the costs.
- You may be able to get a cell phone for a small fee, or even free, depending on the type of data plan you use, and the rewards program that applies.
- Even so, your parents might still have to spend a few hundred thousand each month on your cell phone data plan, and that adds up to a few million annual costs. While the cost may be lower, the point you have to understand is that you should do your best to find out what the costs are now, and how much of the burden will be added to your family's monthly expenses if you add a new iPhone.
Step 2. Show that you are responsible
You've worked hard to be more responsible in using your time, money and possessions: great! Hopefully your parents are aware of it, but now is the time to show it.
- Copy the report card, or the latest test results and assignments.
- You may also be able to collect paycheck receipts or a copy of your most recent bank balance.
- Make sure that you also prepare a copy of your spending limit, which includes the costs you can afford to spend on the phone.
- Save all of these files in a directory that you will take with you when conveying your wishes to your parents.
Step 3. Ask your parents to sit with you
It is important that you choose the right time and place to start this conversation with your parents. You have to show that you are serious, and do your best to increase your chances of getting their approval.
- Instead of saying it out of the blue when your parents just come home from work and feel tired, try this: "Mom and dad, I've been looking into the benefits of owning an iPhone, and I think I'm mature enough and responsible enough to own one." iPhone. I've got some paperwork ready as a proposal, and I'd like to pass on that. Can we talk about it this weekend?"
- They may be amazed when they realize that their child has grown up, and that's a good sign!
Part 3 of 3: Trying to Get Your Requests Acknowledged
Step 1. Explain how you can use your iPhone to stay organized
Once your parents have agreed to sit down and discuss it with you, explain how useful iPhone can be to you. One of the most useful features of the iPhone is its self-organization tools, such as the calendar feature it provides.
Explain how iPhone can be used to keep you focused on study, work, or extracurricular activities, and explain how they can send information about an appointment so that it appears on your phone calendar
Step 2. Explain how you use your iPhone to get your homework done
Broadly speaking, the iPhone is a portable computer that can access the internet easily; owning an iPhone means you can directly access the best libraries, teachers, and resources.
- Explain all the useful features you can use when you have an iPhone, such as free dictionary apps and encyclopedias, as well as how easy it is to access your class website.
- Having a list of educational apps to show parents might be a good thing. You can also open the app store page using a laptop/computer to show it to your parents, or you can even borrow a friend's iPhone to show a demonstration.
Step 3. Tell your parents that you will be careful when you are online or texting
Your parents may be worried that they've read about studies showing that 1 in 3 young people have sent other people nude photos of themselves, and more than half of young people were asked to do so. The same study also states that children who do sexting tend to be more sexually active.
Tell your parents that you won't be using your phone for sexting or taking nude photos, and promise that you'll let them know if someone else is bothering you or asking you to do anything sexual
Step 4. Promise your parents that you won't sleep near your iPhone
Your parents might worry that you'll be "hooked" on your iPhone, to the point that you're sleeping too late from surfing the web or replying to text messages.
- Studies show that sleeping near a cell phone can interfere with sleep quality, and may also be a contributing factor to depression.
- Make a deal to turn off your phone at night and put it in another room. Even if your iPhone has an alarm, you can use a regular alarm clock to wake yourself up.
Step 5. Promise that you won't text until you lose track of time
Even if there is no limit on sending text messages provided by your data plan, your parents may be concerned about the possibility that you will continue to stick with your phone by constantly exchanging messages with friends.
- This can distance you from your family, and your communication skills may not develop.
- Tell your parents that you want to put down your phone at dinner and go out with them, and also that you won't be texting while studying.
Step 6. Let your parents "spy" on you
Parents may be more willing to buy an iPhone if you allow them to use the parental control features.
- With parental controls, they can monitor the time spent using their phone, monitor all the sites they visit, and many other things.
- In fact, parents may feel more comfortable giving you some freedom once they know that GPS and monitoring features can be used to track your position and know who you're going with.
Step 7. Tell us how grateful you are to get your iPhone
After you make your request, try to say something like: "Mom and dad, I know I have a big request, but I want to ask you to trust me. If you are willing to give me a chance, I will not let you down, and I will be very grateful for it.""
Step 8. Give parents time to think about it
Your parents may want or need time to think about it and discuss it in private, and asking for a direct answer won't help you.
Tell them that you are willing to wait for their response: "Thanks for listening to me. Do you two need some time to discuss this together?"
Step 9. Prepare to be rejected
You've done your best to show why you're worthy of trusting an iPhone, and it's natural to have high expectations. Even so, your parents might say "no."
While you may have your reasons for getting an iPhone, your parents certainly have their reasons for refusing your current request. It's okay to ask them to explain why, and if they're willing to do so, you may be able to understand their point of view and work to change their decision
Step 10. If that's the case, you can offer a trial period to use your phone, and agree to have your phone taken away when you don't fulfill all your promises
To do so, you must agree that the phone can be taken away by the parents when you do not fulfill the appointment.
Step 11. Respect their final decision
If your parents reject all of your suggestions, ask them to reconsider later, then end the conversation.
You are much more likely to get their approval in the next few months if you don't whine and pout while you wait
Step 12. Keep your promise
If your parents finally agree to your request-congratulations! You must now fulfill all the promises that have been made to them.
For example, if you promise to turn off your phone at 9pm every night, do it! Don't think your parents don't know or don't care when you check your phone every now and then at 10pm or 11pm after they go to bed
Tips
- Talking about "iPhone" with your parents can show that you are interested and know about the product. By mentioning the iPhone and conveying all the information about the iPhone in stages, one of which is the price of the iPhone, you can show them that you know about the phone you want to buy, and they may feel that you are responsible for that.
- Find cheap iPhone deals with good networks.
- If you buy a used iPhone, make sure that the applicable contract is genuine.
- Make sure that your parents are sure that your grades will not drop.
- If they refuse your request, be patient. Show that you are old enough to own a cell phone.
- Never get angry if your parents refuse your request.
- If your parents refuse your request, you can try to get their old iPhone, so they don't have to buy a new iPhone for you.
Warning
- Losing an iPhone is a big loss. This can weigh heavily on the minds of parents.
- If they say they won't buy you an iPhone this year, respond tactfully and try to behave as perfectly as possible until Christmas or your birthday arrives. That way, they can see how important an iPhone is to you, and if your birthday or Christmas is just around the corner, they might consider buying one for you.
- Some parents don't want their children to have an iPhone. If so, be grateful that you are still allowed to have a cell phone. Not only is it expensive when you buy it, the other things needed to use an iPhone are also expensive, and it's possible that they don't have the extra cash for a phone that they think is just for playing.
